Mega Evolution Card Prices: Only 32 of 173 Rose

"A mark at or above $599.04 on October 15 makes the call wrong, and this column will print it wrong". Card Talk ran that on August 31, and we re-pulled it today. Mega Evolution card prices are the weakest block on our board this week, and age alone does not explain the rest of it.

Where the two open calls stood on September 7

Neither open call has reached its review date. Grading one early would be noise dressed as honesty, so both stay open below. The interim reads still belong in public, because one of the two has turned against us since we made it.

Call 1 rests on three Journey Together products. Why the Journey Together booster box fell through August left that box marked at $249.74 on August 28, and it reads $243.08 today, still under the August level the call named. The elite trainer box rose from $137.61 to $140.01 over the same stretch.

The bundle is the leg this call can lose on, down from $46.00 to $45.12 between August 28 and September 7. Two of the three legs still track the call, which is where it stood a week ago. Our running index of sealed product marks carries the box at $243.08 and the bundle at $45.12 on every rebuild of this page.

Call 2 is the one running against us, and we would rather write that now than at the review date. We said on August 31 that the 30th Celebration Ultra Premium Collection [Day] would be marked below $599.04 on October 15, four weeks after the set reaches shelves. It reads $614.91 today, which is $15.87 the wrong side of the line.

The August reading of the 30th Celebration preorder marks is where that number came from, and the product has sat above the line on every reading since, peaking at $621.78 on September 2. It has eased on each of the three readings since that peak, so nothing is settled with five weeks left, and the honest interim word is losing.

What Mega Evolution card prices did against the rest of the board

Our tracker followed 3,008 price moves for the week ending September 7 and passed 654 of them through its checks. Of those 654 moves, 417 fell against 235 that rose. A red week is the baseline here rather than the finding, and the finding is where the red sits.

The 173 Mega Evolution era rows on that list carried 32 gainers, against 203 gainers across the other 481 rows. That is 18% against 42%, counted the same way on the same day. Nine sets carry the Mega Evolution name, running from Mega Evolution itself in September of 2025 through the unreleased Delta Reign dated November of 2026.

The daily table of price moves this reading is cut from shows the same shape one row at a time. The obvious cause is that most of this product is young and still arriving, and the census under it agrees. Mega Lucario ex 179 from the first set has 20,315 graded copies, where Mega Darkrai ex 116 from Pitch Black has 180. People have barely started sending the newest sets in, so sellers are probably still working out where the cards belong.

Where the age of a set stops explaining the board

Age looks like the whole story until the year buckets sit beside each other. Sets first published in 2022 came out 46% up on the week, and 2023 sets 36% up. Then 2024 breaks it, at 63% up, which is the greenest year on the whole board.

The 2025 sets ran 31% and the 2026 sets 14%, so this is not a clean slope from old to new. Paldean Fates from January of 2024 sat at 22 of 27 up. We can't explain that one from our own data, and we'd rather say so than reach for a reason.

Ascended Heroes is the largest Mega Evolution block on the board, at 34 rows with 7 up. It is also the set behind the Mega Gengar ex 284 census nobody had opened, which counted a thin population in the same place. Two of our own pieces landing on one set prove nothing, though they do say where the movement is.

The call we are making on September 7 of 2026

One dated call goes into the ledger every week. Call 3, made on September 7 of 2026, is that fewer than 30% of the Mega Evolution era rows on our board are up on the week when we re-pull on October 20. It stands at 18% today, so a bounce to 30% or better inside six weeks makes the call wrong. If fewer than 60 of those rows survive our checks that day, we record it unverifiable instead of forcing a verdict.

None of this is advice about what to buy, and the page setting out how we count a price move carries the limits on it. The 2026 sets could turn on one restock decision no price feed can see. That's the honest weakness in call 3, and it is written here rather than in October.
