Mega Gengar ex 284 is the Gengar this week's talk does not support. The room keeps asking which Gengar is the grail, and real money is behind the question. We upvoted a fair few of those threads ourselves.
What the room kept asking
A collector went shopping for a Gengar grail on August twenty ninth. The budget was eight to ten thousand dollars. "Which one of these gengars do you guys think has room to grow", the post read.
Fifty eight. That is our own count out of the sweep rather than a feeling about the sub. Forty one of them ran in the investing sub alone.
One thread on August thirty first asked what separates the Ascended Heroes Mega Gengar from the Phantasmal Flames one. "They both look the same", the poster wrote, after a vendor charged three dollars more for the newer print.
The August twenty fourth seller wanted fifteen hundred for a BGS nine and a half. No takers. The seller asked the sub to explain the market rather than cut the price blindly.
The price on the card everyone names
PriceCharting had Mega Gengar ex 284 near two thousand dollars in a PSA 10 on September second. Ungraded sat near nine hundred and fifty the same day. The graded nine sat near nine hundred.
Ascended Heroes landed in January, so every copy of the card in a slab today came out of seven months of packs. Seven months. Only one Gengar printed since 2020 carries a higher PSA 10 price on our board, the secret Gengar VMAX out of Fusion Strike.
The distance from that nine to that ten is what a submission chases. We keep that pairing on the board that puts PSA 9 beside PSA 10. The fee side of that trade sits in our arithmetic on a resubmission at the current PSA tier.
The Gengar census nobody opened
Our board counts 8,430 PSA 10 copies of Mega Gengar ex 284 in August. They came out of 13,288 sent in. Roughly two in three of everything submitted comes back a ten.
Sabrina's Gengar from Gym Heroes carries 34 PSA 10 copies, out of 8,973 submitted since the set landed in August of 2000. Same room. Someone there asked whether one was worth grading on August twenty ninth.
Better than two thousand more grades landed on it in the thirty days to August. Only its own sibling out of the same set added more. Not scarce.
A census that big on a card this young is a story about how many packs got opened. It is not a story about what survived twenty six years in a binder. The Tag Team promo we took apart in August had the same shape.
