STRATEGIES
Three ways people actually make money in this market, each with its real failure mode attached. Everything here reads from the same screened data as the rest of the site. Nothing on this page is financial advice, and graded cards are speculative and can take months to sell at a fair price.
Raw to graded arbitrage
Buy the raw card, grade it, sell the slab. It works when the spread between raw and graded is wide AND the card gems often enough that the odds carry the fee. The table below screens every tracked English card for exactly that: PriceCharting's own ungraded price as the cost basis, a gem rate of at least 15 percent on at least 100 gradings, and a positive expected value at the PSA Regular fee with a 13 percent selling cost assumption. Odds come from each card's own population curve.

EV at defaults means PSA Regular $79.99 plus a 13 percent selling assumption, weighted by the card's own population odds. Change any input in the calculator.
The failure mode: gem rates describe cards people chose to submit, and people submit clean copies. Your random eBay raw runs worse odds than the table shows. Buy cards you have seen in high resolution photos, price in the miss, and run your exact numbers through the calculator before shipping anything.
Pop spike defense
Population reports only grow. When submissions flood into a card you hold, every new 10 is future supply on the sell side, and the price usually follows with a lag. The market page surfaces the fastest expanding established populations every day. Holding something that shows up there is not automatically a sell signal, but it is a reason to check whether the demand side is growing as fast as the slab count. The eras where this bites hardest are new special sets during their submission wave.

Sealed holding
The longest and most boring strategy: buy sealed product at or near retail, store it properly, and wait years. Supply falls as boxes get opened; demand decides everything else. The sealed index tracks current market prices across every major English set since 2019, and its scenario modeler makes you state your growth assumption out loud instead of borrowing someone's chart. Reprint waves are the main early risk, storage and liquidity the quiet late ones.
What none of these strategies survive
Buying at the top of a hype cycle. Every strategy above assumes entry prices set by boredom, not by a spike. The single most useful discipline in this hobby is checking where a card sits against its own history before buying, and the second is checking whether the population is quietly doubling underneath it. Both take under a minute on this site.
