On November 14 of 2025, Phantasmal Flames reached English shelves as the second numbered expansion of the Mega Evolution block, and it has spent every day since then being displaced by something newer. Phantasmal Flames is the only numbered Mega Evolution expansion whose catalogue carries no half booster box, and ten months after release it holds the dearest booster pack and the dearest booster box in its own block. I spent several years writing purchase orders for a regional hobby distributor, where the configuration list on a sell sheet told a buyer more than the retail column ever did. Every figure below was read off a source this week, and the piece runs upstream to downstream, from what was printed and configured through what was opened and counted, with the price arriving at the end. Nothing here is financial advice, and no projection appears without the method that produced it stated in the same breath.
Eight Mega Evolution releases, dated out of the catalogue
TCGplayer stamps every expansion group in its own catalogue with a release date, and those dates were read directly off the catalogue on September 29 of 2026 rather than recalled from anywhere. The Mega Evolution block runs Mega Evolution on September 26 of 2025, Phantasmal Flames on November 14 of 2025, Ascended Heroes on January 30 of 2026, and Perfect Order on March 27 of the same year. Chaos Rising followed on May 22, Pitch Black on July 17, the 30th Celebration set on September 16, and Delta Reign carries a catalogue date of November 6 that has not arrived yet. Seven of those eight are already on shelves, which puts Phantasmal Flames five releases back from whatever a retail card aisle is currently facing outward. The seven gaps between consecutive releases inside the block run from 49 days at the shortest out to 77 days at the longest, and their mean is 58.0 days.
Anybody who has watched the last two years of English releases will suspect that the calendar has been accelerating, and the catalogue is the place to test that rather than the place to assume it. Running the same measurement across the Sword and Shield era, and dropping the same day pairs where a main set and its trainer gallery share one date, gives 12 intervals averaging 89.8 days. The Scarlet and Violet era gives 14 intervals averaging 60.0 days, and the Mega Evolution block gives 58.0, which puts the last two eras within two days of one another. The calendar tightened once, at the changeover into Scarlet and Violet in 2023, and it has held steady since. Displacement is therefore an ordinary condition of a modern English set rather than something happening to this one in particular, and the useful question is what a set does after it stops being the current one.
The one configuration Phantasmal Flames never received
A half booster box is a real configuration with a published contents line, and the copy attached to the Mega Evolution version states that each one holds 18 booster packs against the 36 in a full display. Read across the block on September 29 of 2026, that configuration exists for Mega Evolution, for Perfect Order, for Chaos Rising, for Pitch Black and for Delta Reign, which is five of the six numbered expansions. Phantasmal Flames is the expansion without one, and the two special sets in the block, Ascended Heroes and the 30th Celebration, carry no booster display of any kind and so do not belong in the comparison at all. Mega Evolution went further still and shipped an enhanced booster box alongside both, a 36 pack display whose own contents line adds a stamped promo card featuring Bulbasaur. None of that establishes what the company decided about Phantasmal Flames, and no sell sheet for the set has reached us, so everything here is read off a catalogue rather than off a plan.
What did arrive after launch is worth setting out, because the arrival order of product numbers is the closest public substitute for a schedule that anybody outside the distribution chain can read. That reading was tested by this column across 32 tracked expansions in the catalogue evidence behind the Prismatic Evolutions reprint question, where every one of them ordered its product numbers in the same direction as its own calendar of release dates. A build and battle box appeared on December 1 of 2025, two premium checklane blisters featuring Arven's Greedent and Ethan's Magcargo followed on January 26 of 2026, and case quantities of the blisters and the sleeved packs landed in March and April. One further row was created on September 8 of 2026, and it does not describe new sealed product, because its own contents line says that each one holds three random cards. No new sealed configuration of packs has entered since those blisters in January, which is eight months of a catalogue standing still while five newer expansions filled the shelves in front of it. That is the entire allocation reading available from outside, and it is a narrow one, because allocation itself is the step nobody without a distribution account can observe directly.
Who is still cutting these boxes open, ten months on
Grading volume is the only public counter of how much of an expansion has actually been opened, since a card cannot reach a census without somebody first tearing the wrapper it arrived in. At the recount dated 2026-09-20, the English Phantasmal Flames rows held 303,613 graded copies across 195 entries, with 20,969 of those grades recorded inside the 30 days before the count. Set that figure against the 21 other modern English expansions counted the same way on the same date and it ranks third of 22, behind only Ascended Heroes at 66,383 grades and Perfect Order at 21,555. Both of the expansions ahead of it are 2026 releases, aged 7.7 and 5.8 months at the recount against the 10.2 months Phantasmal Flames had behind it by then. Every other expansion counted sits below it whatever its year, including its own block opener Mega Evolution at 15,527 and Destined Rivals at 13,713.
Dividing lifetime grades by months of life gives a coarser but age adjusted version of the same question, and Phantasmal Flames runs at 29,810 graded copies a month on it. Mega Evolution runs at 32,133 and Ascended Heroes at 32,851, so all three Mega Evolution expansions with a real census behind them cluster near the top of the modern range. Journey Together, seven months older than Phantasmal Flames and the subject of an earlier piece on why its booster box gave up ground through August of 2026, runs at 13,436 a month, which is well under half of any of them. Prismatic Evolutions runs at 18,686 a month on the same measure and Pokemon 151 at 23,293. An expansion being opened at 29,810 a month ten months on is one whose packs are still reaching people who want to open them, and packs cannot be opened unless somebody is still able to buy them.
What the September 20 recount counted inside the set
The most submitted row in the set is the special illustration rare Mega Charizard X ex at card 125, which held 52,980 graded copies with 31,649 of them at a ten. That row grew its graded population by 6.9% in the 30 days before the recount, and its gem rate across everything ever submitted stands at 59.7%. The same Pokemon appears again at card 130 as a mega hyper rare, holding 18,877 graded copies against 1,930 tens, which is a gem rate of 10.2%. That second row is a good part of why the boxes keep getting opened, and the tool that turns an expansion's published pull rates into per pack odds puts a number on how rarely the chase lands. Behind both of them sits the illustration rare Meowth at card 106 with 30,946 graded copies, which is a deeper population than most expansions manage on their chase card at all.
The Phantasmal Flames booster box price, and the pack underneath it
The daily snapshots of TCGplayer aggregate prices kept on this site cover 2026-08-08 to 2026-09-29, and across that window the Phantasmal Flames booster box opened at $409.52 on August 8 and closed at $391.05 on September 29. It reached a low of $373.91 on August 15, recovered to $406.39 by September 4, then held between $397 and $399 across the fortnight from September 8 without doing anything worth reporting. On September 21 the cheapest listing on the stack dropped from $395.00 to $314.99, and the aggregate followed it down to $370.46 the next day and $361.95 by September 24. By September 29 the cheapest listing had rebuilt to $369.95 and the aggregate had returned to $391.05, which is the shape of one cheap listing clearing rather than a wave of new product arriving. The floor is the one number never quoted as a price here, and the reason sits in the note explaining how these figures are built, because foreign product and accessories are routinely listed under an English product identifier.
The published contents lines make the per pack arithmetic straightforward, because a booster box holds 36 packs and a booster bundle holds 6 of them. An elite trainer box holds 9 packs and the Pokemon Center version of it holds 11, and it is marked at $287.85 against $153.55 for the standard one. On the marks read on September 29 of 2026 those work out at $10.86 a pack inside the booster box, $14.51 inside the bundle, $17.06 inside the elite trainer box and $26.17 inside the Pokemon Center box. A single loose Phantasmal Flames pack marked $11.59 on that same day, so the full display was the only configuration of the four pricing a pack below what one cost on its own. Across the block the contrast runs sharper still, because on the same day Perfect Order marked $175.75 a box with packs at $5.79, Chaos Rising marked $190.72 with packs at $5.63 and Pitch Black marked $192.46 with packs at $6.08. Mega Evolution marked $308.32 with packs at $8.12, which leaves Phantasmal Flames carrying the dearest box and the dearest pack in its own block by a wide distance, a gap that holds whether the comparison is run on full displays or on single packs, and the two of those five expansions that appear on the sealed marks this site keeps across 238 products carry those same figures.
What the channel does before November 6 of 2026
Delta Reign already sits in the catalogue as 21 presale rows created on August 21 of 2026, every one of them dated to November 6 apart from its build and battle box, which is dated two weeks later. Among those rows is a half booster box listed from launch rather than added afterwards, which is exactly the configuration Phantasmal Flames has gone its whole commercial life without. A new expansion taking shelf facings in November will not remove a single existing Phantasmal Flames display from anybody's warehouse, and the packs already sold will keep arriving at graders at whatever rate they have been arriving. The plain expectation for October and November of 2026 is that the elite trainer box and the bundle hold the ground they took through September while the booster box stays above its September 24 mark of $361.95.
